Compassionate Communication and Parenting Tips

Good Reads!
Do you have time for a good read this summer? Check out some of these. If you have discovered a Compassioante Communication or Parenting book you love, let me know about it!

While Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication is the 'classic,' other books on Compassionate/Nonviolent Communication are available, each with its own style. Some are less like a textbook so easier to read.

Being Genuine is a thoughtful introduction by Tom D'Ansenbourg, a French therapist.

Don't Be Nice, Be Real by Kelly Bryson is a humorous, somewhat rambling, and fun read.

What We Say Matters by Judith and Ike Lasater, is an introduction that connects NVC with some Buddhist and Yoga principles.

Connecting Across Differences by Jane Connor and Dian Killian is written for young adults.

Peaceful Living by Mary MacKenzie is an NVC meditation-a-day- great way to remember to practice compassion.

Other NVC-related books and booklets can be found at Puddledancer Press.

Favorite Parenting Books...

Remember that some of these are available as audiobooks-- in case you don't get to sit still much!

Playful Parenting by Lawrence Cohen is best for preschoolers. A wonderful resource for helping parents connect and guide through play. (available as audiobook too!)

Respectful Parents, Respectful Kids by Sura Hart and Victoria Kindle Hodson - Best for grade-school age kids. An encyclopedia of tools and tutorials for Compassionate Parenting.

Parenting from the Inside Out by Daniel Siegel and Mary Hartzell talks about attachment, brain development, and other weighty topics: very enlightening.

Beyond Consequences, Logic and Control: a Love Based Approach to Helping Children with Severe Behaviors by Heather Forbes gives hope to parents with big challenges.

Other resources: The International Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) lists NVC practitioners, certified trainers, trainings, and resources. NVC Academy offers NVC telecourses and audio and video archives. NVC World has links to NVC resources of all types.

Happy reading! And share your favorites with me!

"Compassion is a practically acquired knowledge, like dancing.
You must do it and practice diligently day by day."
